Aiuká recently held a technical workshop in Lima focused on the challenges of including wildlife in environmental emergency prevention and response initiatives in Peru. The event took place in June and was organized in partnership with the Brazilian Environmental Protection Agency (IBAMA), which was invited by Aiuká and OceanPact to share its experience in Brazil in this area.
The meeting brought together 12 Peruvian government officials responsible for regulating and supervising activities related to environmental management, prevention of environmental emergencies and responses to them. The objective was to share lessons learned, challenges and solutions applicable to local conditions, thereby strengthening the country’s institutional capacity to protect wildlife in critical situations.
“Brazil has already made significant progress on this issue. That is why we seek to share experiences that connect government bodies and industry, placing due emphasis on activities involving wildlife. This workshop was designed to stimulate reflection on Peruvian circumstances and identify possible pathways and measures. And it was a great success,” said Valeria Ruoppolo, Aiuká’s director.
IBAMA’s participation was essential in presenting the regulatory framework that underpins Brazil’s environmental licensing model, which is considered a leading international example. During the workshop, OceanPact specialists presented operational cases and highlighted the importance of prevention, appropriate infrastructure and coordination between organizations to ensure effective action, especially in coastal and offshore areas.
Aiuká is part of OceanPact, alongside EnvironPact, adding to the company’s active role in disseminating best practices and developing integrated solutions for environmental protection on an international scale.
