Marine spatial plan for southeast Brazil enters development phase

The development phase of a marine spatial plan for southeast Brazil has officially begun. The project was officially launched by the Blue Southeast Consortium (“Consórcio Sudeste Azul”) – a partnership between OceanPact subsidiary EnvironPact and think tank Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) – at a series of events held in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Vitória.

Marine spatial planning is a national initiative designed to promote the sustainable use of marine space by integrating economic, environmental and social dimensions. The process is participatory and seeks to balance development with the conservation of marine ecosystems.

In Brazil’s Southeast region, the Blue Southeast Consortium is responsible for the project’s technical implementation, as part of the federal government’s commitment to the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

More than 60 professionals are now working to turn marine spatial planning into a practical tool for sustainable management of ocean activities, ensuring that the use of marine space develops in an orderly, transparent and inclusive way.
