OceanPact is bringing together key players from the offshore sector, academia and the public sector for the first edition of Ocean Experts.

This online event, whose first edition will look at “The offshore sector’s technological challenges in the next five years”, is a cutting-edge platform for discussing the latest trends in technology, the transition to more sustainable and efficient energy sources and the sector’s resilience amid climate change.

    Leonardo Barreira

    OceanPact Director

    Doctorate in ocean engineering and 30 years of experience in the Brazilian Navy, including 15 in its research and development area. He served as research superintendent at the Navy Research Institute and head of the Ocean Engineering Group at the Admiral Paulo Moreira Ocean Research Institute. He is currently one of the directors of OceanPact, where his work focuses on R&D and remote operations.

    Vegard Hovstein

    CEO of Maritime Robotics

    Maritime Robotics is one of the internationally pioneering companies within Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) and has delivered more than 150 unmanned boats to international customers within maritime data acquisition. Based on their core-technology within maritime control systems, Maritime Robotics is now scaling their technologies into new business areas. Vegard Evjen Hovstein is the CEO of Maritime Robotics and has worked in the unmanned vehicle business his entire career since he graduated from the Department of Engineering Cybernetics at the Norwegian University of Science Technology in 2001. Vegard founded Maritime Robotics in 2005 and serves as a board member of the Norwegian Forum for Autonomous Ships (NFAS).

  • Segen Estefen

    Segen Estefen

    Managing Director of Brazil’s National Institute for Ocean Research.

    Professor of ocean structures and underwater engineering at Rio de Janeiro Federal University, where he is general manager of the Underwater Technology Laboratory and coordinator of the Offshore Renewable Energy Research Group. In 2023, he was appointed managing director of the National Institute for Ocean Research. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the Brazilian Naval Engineering Society and the National Engineering Academy. He was awarded the Tamandaré Medal of Merit by the Brazilian Navy in 2006, the Sobena Prize in 2007 and the Coppe Lobo Carneiro Academic Merit Prize in 2018.
