The progress of the High Seas Treaty — formally known as the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement and considered a milestone for international ocean governance — is at the center of global discussions on marine conservation and the blue economy.
To broaden reflections on the topic, the 3rd BBNJ Symposium begins today at the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro, with the support of OceanPact.
The event, which runs until Thursday, March 12, brings together experts, government representatives, and national and international scientific institutions.
During the opening panel, alongside leading figures discussing the role of science in the conservation and regeneration of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, OceanPact was represented by our blue new business manager, Amandine Chevé.
In Canada last week, the treaty was also highlighted at the 13th World Ocean Summit, held in Montreal. Our sustainability and blue new business director, Fernando Borensztein, attended discussions on the progress of the BBNJ Agreement, the impacts of the WTO agreement on fisheries subsidies, ocean acidification and the use of tools such as artificial intelligence and digital twins in ocean management.
“We are seeing increasing convergence between science, public policy, financing and innovation in the ocean agenda. The ocean is increasingly at the center of solutions for climate, biodiversity and sustainable development,” Borensztein said.
