Guanabara Bay is one of Rio de Janeiro’s greatest symbols – and one of its biggest environmental challenges, due to improper waste disposal. In October, OceanPact organized a cleanup effort in the mangrove area near Fundão Park, close to OceanPact Tech’s office, underscoring its commitment to caring for the seas and marking the continuation of its partnership with the Blue Keepers Project.
OceanPact Tech’s autonomous and remotely operated vessel, “Blue Boat,” was used to collect waste from the water and assist with data processing.
The cleanup effort removed more than 375 kilograms of waste, including tires, cables, hoses, part of a sofa frame and even a piece of a boat ladder. The material was sent for proper disposal in partnership with three local organizations: the Urban Sea Institute, the BioTrabalho Group (Gbiotra) and the Shore Without Trash Project.
