OceanPact scientific paper analyzes Brazilian mangroves’ condition and recommends solutions for their conservation and recovery

OceanPact and Rio de Janeiro Federal University (UFRJ) recently produced a scientific article that was published in the journal Science of the Total Environment. Titled “Current Status of Brazilian Mangroves: Their Ecosystem Services, Conservation, Restoration, Microbial Diversity and Biotechnologies,” the paper reinforces the strategic role of mangroves as blue carbon ecosystems, which are fundamental for mitigating climate change.

The study was produced by two OceanPact employees who both have doctorates – new blue business specialist Sylvia Alqueres and blue carbon specialist Luiz Gomes – as well as researchers at UFRJ. The article analyzes the main ecosystem services provided by mangroves, including coastal protection, support for fishing and maintenance of biodiversity, and discusses growing threats such as urbanization, pollution and the expansion of aquaculture.

The paper also presents case studies, including one about Guanabara Bay, and points to innovative solutions, such as the use of microbial biotechnologies to restore degraded areas. The authors also emphasize the importance of local community participation and the formulation of effective public policies to ensure the conservation of these ecosystems.

“This publication strengthens OceanPact’s position as a leader in science applied to marine and coastal sustainability. It underscores the significance of the company’s work on blue carbon and coastal conservation issues, as well as reinforcing our ability to generate positive impact through innovation,” says Sylvia Alqueres.

She also highlights the importance of institutional partnerships. “This type of partnership is essential for developing cutting-edge scientific solutions that can be applied on a large scale, in line with our purpose of integrating science, innovation and sustainability,” she says.

Science of the Total Environment is one of the leading international scientific journals in environmental research. It brings together studies on climate change, ecosystems, pollution, natural resources and sustainability, connecting science and practical solutions to global challenges.
